MMCs have been used for years in applications that require high stiffness and low density, essentially approaching the stiffness of steel while maintaining the density of aluminum. Brake rotors, connecting rods, and pistons are just a few of the applications where MMCs have seen some success. These materials have also been tried in ballistic applications for up-armoring vehicles, but there have always been restrictions relating to either size/shape capability, or the ability to achieve a high enough ceramic loading to perform well under impact.
Breakthrough, inexpensive technology
M Cubed maintains a patented process that allows us to cast highly-loaded MMCs into large shapes, but without using expensive forming processes. We currently cast shapes as large as 1000 lbs, 8 feet square, and have an installed manufacturing capacity of over 2 tons per day. Our ability to cast complex shapes to tight dimensional tolerances also allows us to minimize final machining.
From a ballistic standpoint, MMCs are attractive because they can be made to over double the thickness of steel while still maintaining the same areal density. MMCs also have a very high hardness, a property which can be tailored by adjusting the type and amount of ceramic loading.
